TYLER J. SMITH is a partner in the Health Care Litigation; Litigation Defense; and Federal and State Qui Tam Litigation Practice Groups of Pietragallo Gordon Alfano Bosick & Raspanti, LLP.

Mr. Smith is an expert in trial advocacy, having tried approximately 30 corporate and professional liability lawsuits to verdict in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. He is regional counsel to The Doctors Company, the leading physician-owned medical malpractice insurer in the United States.  His corporate client portfolio has included: West Penn Allegheny Health Systems, Clinical Studies Ltd., Lab Corporation, Eckerd Drug, Rite Aide, Vantage Home Health Infusion Inc., The Medicine’s Company, Grane Health Care, Lasik Vision Institute, Genesis Health Care, Quorum Health Resources and Lowe's Home Improvement stores.

He has co-defended claims against pharmaceutical giants Eli Lilly and Company (Zyprexa), Astra Zeneca Pharmaceuticals LP (Seroquel), Purdue Pharma LP and Abbott Laboratories (Oxycontin).  He has also co-defended Standard Process Inc. in connection with its herbal supplements line, Medi Herb Inc.

Mr. Smith specializes in health care law and has counseled professionals in the following areas: corporate negligence, medical negligence, director and officer contracts, RICO, HIPAA, licensing and credentialing disputes, sexual misconduct, product liability, informed consent, compliance/risk management, patient safety and quality assurance, civil conspiracy, fraud, employment discrimination/retaliation and defamation.

Mr. Smith received his J.D. degree from The Penn State Dickinson School of Law in 1993. He is a member of The Dickinson Journal of International Law. He received his undergraduate degree with honors in business management and minors in accounting and economics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1990.

Mr. Smith is co-author of the column "Medical Malpractice Quiz" in Outpatient Surgery Magazine, a national publication. According to a June 2007 study by Preston/Rogers Associates, 47 percent of the universe of surgical decision-makers will see any given issue of Outpatient Surgery. He has lectured nationally in the areas of medical malpractice and patient safety and at the request of Professional Risk Management Society, The Pennsylvania Health Care Association and The Hospital and Healthcare Association of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Smith is licensed to practice law in all state courts of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. He is certified to practice law in the Federal District Courts for the Western District of Pennsylvania and the Southern District of West Virginia and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
